a computer is an electronic machine used for the processing of data by using certain set of instruction called programs or command. A computer accept input input data from human user via input devices such as keyboard, diskette, CD-ROM, mouse, joystick. It processes data and reports the output via output devices such as card punch, plotter, printer, monitor, e.t.c.

A computer as a system, consist of a number of hardware and software component which cooperate with one another to carry out a specific information processing task. The internal organization and structuring of these components forms what is known as the computer system architecture.

HISTORY AND EVOLUTION OF DIGITAL COMPUTERS.

At about 500BC, the ABACUS system was invented in China to replace the drudgery traditional methods of counting, the system is known to have been used in Europe, China, Japan, Greece and Indian. ABACUS qualifies as a digital device since it uses beads or pebbles as counters to calculate discrete data.

In 1617,  John Napier a scottish mathematician devised the logarithms for calculation. The tool allows one to multiply and divide large numbers very quickly and accurately. A by-products of logarithms is the Napier bones devised by Napier and was used to multiply , divide and find the square and the cuberoots of numbers.

In 1640, Blarise Pascal a french mathematician and a philosopher started to build a mechanical adding and subtracting machine to aid his father, a tax collector in calculating taxes faster. The first model was presented publicly in 1645, this machine was names PASCAL machine.

In 1822, Charles Babbage annoouced the construction of a small machine, which is capable of processing complex calculations correctly and rapidly. He was supported by the British government on the recommendation of the royal society to build a larger machine he called DIFFERENCE MACHINE, at about 10 years later, he was unable to complete the project when he concieved the idea of ANALYTICAL ENGINE. Babbage was too ambious and started work on the analytical engine while he was still a student. He aimed at building a program-controlled, mechanical and digital computer which will incorporate arithemetric unit, memory unit, punched-input card and a printing mechanism. The program was to be provided by set of JACQUARD CARD, however he was unable to complete the implementation of the machine before he died in 1871.

Dr. Hermann Hollenith, aq statiscian while at the census department in the U.S.A was able to produce a census machine that based on punch cards to assist in mechanical works of tabulating statistical data.

Some years  after the death of Hollrith, Professor Howard Aiken of Harvard university in U.S.A in collaboration with IBM producesd an electro mechanical computing machine called automatic sequential control calculator (ASCC) popularly known as marked, the machine used Hollerith cards as input medium.

Jhon Von Neumann together with A.W Burks and H.H Goldstone in 1946 describe a machine called Von Neumann machine, the design of the present day computer is base on the von Neumann model. Von Neumann machine consist of memory storage, control unit, arithemetric and logical unit, input/output unit. It was a general purpose electronic machine rather than a mechanical machine which babbage planned to develop

A computer consist of two basic things namely Hardware and soft ware.

HARD WARE: it is the phgysical part of the computer that you can touch, see. The hardware is the combination of both input and output uint, all input and output unit forms the hardware, examples of hardwares are printers, scanner, monitor, keyboard, e.t.c

SOFT WARE: it is the program that drive the hard ware to accomplish a specific tasks, software is written in codes known as programming language. A user uses a computer through hardware and soft ware. software tells the hardware how to accept input from the user and how to produce the outputfor the user. the software forms the interface betwwn the user and the hardware, the software can be written in codes examples of codes in which the software is written is COBOL, C+, C+++, PASCAL, FORTRAN, MATLAB, VISUAL BASIC, e.t.c

CENTRAL PROCESSING UNIT: CPU means central processing unit, the CPU consist of arithemetic and logical unit, control unit and memory unit, the hardware is the external device which are connected to the CPU. CPU consist of casing, mother board, floppy disk drive, compact disk drive, e.yt.c. Casing consist of the port USb (universal Serial Bus Port, RS232 Port, Mouse port, Power port, inner speaker e.t.c

The mother board is the electrical connection of different component to drive the software and the hardware, the mother board consist ofa powerpoint connector that connect  the cpu power pack in the casing.

The motherboard consist of the floppy disk connector. CD ROM connector, Harddisk connector. the motherboard have a connector that connect all these component to the mother board.
